In STRAIGHT OUT OF HELL 2 (The True Character of a Man) Garry Jones takes us not only into his professional challenges while working in the prison system but his personal challenges struggles as well.Jones is able to find employment and trying to do good while serving as an officer, but there are things about the system that not only disturb him but shapes the way he begins to look at sentencing and those who end up behind bars. There are instances where inmates will test his patience and how far he will go, but we see him try to not only keep his dignity but show them a better way in the process. Probably one of the saddest "full circle" moments for the author is when he sees those he grew up with or heard about end up on the wrong side of the law. This happens a few times as he shares his story in the book, and you can tell that there are some unresolved issues that he has with not only how they got there but what truly separates them from each other.
As if the professional challenges weren't enough, Jones also is dealing with problems on the home front. His marriage is not what he would want it to be, and there are warning signs almost from the beginning. At one point in the book he shares that he stays because of the children, but even that becomes something that seems impossible as the situation continues to break down.
In the end Jones realizes that he has to make changes both professionally and personally, and this leads him in the direction of what he understands to be his purpose. The lessons for us in this book are many, but really they boil down to this simple truth: Until you are walking in alignment with why you are put on this earth you will never be truly happy. Sometimes the challenges we face are just preparing us for something bigger and more far-reaching. It's up to us to learn the lessons and use the experiences to be a better individual and strive to change the world wherever we go.
That is what THE TRUE CHARACTER OF A MAN (or WOMAN) is all about. If we can understand that, then we are on our way to something really great in life.
